Deconstructivist Barnisms
Deconstructivist Barnisms is a series of strange looking barn designs and abstract paintings inspired by some of the world’s most amazing museums of contemporary art. This series of paintings is not a critique of these design approaches, nor is it a criticism of the iconic American Rural landscape as subject matter. Rather, these scenes hybridize dissonant realms of taste and function, blurring the boundaries between utility and artistry, culture and production. Some of the fantastic structures appear relatively practical in layout, with barns accompanied by farmhouses or tool sheds, while others stray from the “barn” model altogether, becoming abstract edifices, deconstructing the formula, and leaving little to anchor the image in any specific context. Pulling the building apart and reconfiguring its pieces clears the artist’s mind of preconceived notions and challenges the familiarity and nostalgia of rural Americana inherent in the setting.
